Dr. Sensitivo: A GYN boycotts a meeting due to the title of the talk

January 19, 2007

Entitled, “The Politics of Tits: A Psycho History of Breast Medicine”, the talk is putting off some GYNs. He’s been told to suck it up:

“Poor fellow,” she said of the complainer. “I’m just so sorry there are people who take issue with things like this.”

“We don’t censor our speakers. We have something called free speech and the First Amendment in this country. Vulgar is in the eyes of the beholder. That’s what I teach my children,” she said.

When did ‘tit’ become a dirty word. Teat is a quite proper name for a nipple (http://m-w.com/dictionary/teat). It may be pronounced either as ‘tit’, or ‘teet’. Tit is merely an alternative spelling for teat and is often confused by the non-agricultural public to mean the whole breast rather than the nipple.
Since tit or teat has been a proper name for the organ for centuries, the prudes need to get over it.
