But isn’t this what libertarians (myself included) have been arguing all along? If they want to ban some substance or other let them. I suspect that they gain more in PR than they lose from anyone who REALLY wants their banned food additive.

You’re probably right about the PR angle. I also wonder if there’s a tinge of lawsuit protection for fear of the trial lawyers making trans-fat the next tobacco companies cash-cow . .
