Label him for what he was. Your headline should have been “Drunk Driver Kills woman”. He wasn’t a medical resident when he drove the wrong way on the highway and hit that woman. I have had to pronounce a 2 year old dead after he was struck by a drunk driver. These people deserve to be in jail.

I absolutely agree. Occupation plays no part in this story and should not be presented as such.

Ditto. When I read the post my first thought was that some resident returning home from hospital feel asleep behind the wheel. Then it turns out it is a drunk driving accident. The post was misleading.

I beg to differ.

“Prosecutors say that Sheridan was leaving a Hopkins function in Fells Point about 2 a.m. July 8 when he drove up the wrong ramp on the North Avenue entrance to the Jones Falls Expressway. Sheridan drove north in the southbound lanes and crashed into a car driven by Letrice Nicole Smith…”

“Sheridan was previously convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in December 2004. He served 18 months of probation that ended eight days before the accident.”

“Sheridan has been at Hopkins since 2002, when he became a resident at the hospital, his lawyer said. The doctor is listed on the Johns Hopkins Web site as a member of the hospital staff and an assistant in the medical school’s department of pathology. Kadish said his client’s contract runs through 2007.”

So for starters we have a drunk s. who happens to be a staff physician at perhaps the most prestigious medical institution in the world. He got drunk at a Johns Hopkins event. He had a history of DUI and was just 8 days off probation.

Yes this is news. It demonstrates that even the most esteemed institution may employ a seriously pathologic pathologist. It demonstrates that the previous DUI probation was too lenient and was ineffective.

Time to yank the medical license, driver’s license, and go to jail.

Wonder what the ER docs at Maryland S.T. must have thought when this guy rolled through the door? Let’s just say the bigger you are the harder you fall. This sells newspapers.

I agree with the first person, regardless of his occupation he was DWI, and he took a person’s life. What makes him better than the next person. Send him to jail.

This man killed an young women full of life and that brought so much joy to everyone she came in contact with just with her smile and presents. This man should be thrown in jail and his medical license should be taken from him. How can someone that is suppose to help save a life be so careless, and get away with some much wrong doing. When will it stop, when will these kind of people be punished for thier actions. HE should never be able to drive again, for what?, for him to kill someone else or reck the life of other innocent people.

My heart goes out to the family who have lost such a precious angel due to someone else’s senseless malicious act. Although the family can rest assure that there love one is in a much better place, What can we do as a society to make sure that justice has been served? Does the fact the he was a doctor makes him better? No….Hell No….My thing is, just because you may attend a function and they serve alcohol that don’t neccessary mean that you consume more than your body can handle besides whatever happen to the slogan “DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE”…Getting behind the wheel should not have been an option that night especially considering the fact that he was drinking. Although whatever reprocusion that the law decides to make it still will not totally feel like justice has been served because whatever happens will not bring back there precious “Nicky” but it will bring some closure to know that he is off the street from harming anyone else. Please everyone… be sure to leave your comment because if we work together as a coalition maybe we can all work towards getting this “M.D.D (MEDICAL DRUNK DRIVER)” what he deserves….Time in jail convicted under the terms of vehicular manslaughter.

The “resident” as you called was not on duty as a resident when this accident a occurred. He was leaving a function. He did not learn from his first mistake when he was charged with DUI, he had a chance and now he has taken a young person’s life and caused serious hardship on the other passenger because he was not willing to learn from his mistake. He deserves to go to jail. He was drunk and he killed a person!!

It doesn’t matter what a person occupation is, a drunk driver is a drunk driver, an irresponsible person behind a car wheel spell danger death an devastation for friends and family.

11 Anonymous February 6, 2007 at 1:42 pm

There is no justification or excuse for this person’s behavior (Doctor or otherwise). He’s a habitual drunk and murderer. He deserves to have his freedom and livelihood taken away forever!! And, the sooner the better for society.

I think that he should never be able to drive again due to the fact that this was not his first drunk driving arrest. He should have been sentenced to 20 years no parole.

How would you feel if this happened to one of your kids?

what would you do?

14 Anonymous February 3, 2009 at 1:20 pm

You drive drunk=go to jail period point blank. Where not even talking about an eye for an eye or a tooth for a tooth. No amount of time or money could replace Nikki. How can we protect your family or friend from a tragedy as this. No one should have to bury there loved one. Ignorance is a silent killer. Ignorant to the fact that your actions could cause the loss of a loved one!

I personally know the family involved in this story and believe me, the other passenger still has hardship to this day. I hear the “resident” for a lack of better terms is in aflorida living nicely. Go figure..
