I could relay a very sickening story about this very thing. I was witness to it and it occurred in the neurologist office. The police were called to help restrain the KID (14 yo). When they got there they were informed (by the doc) it was a complex partial seizure for temporal lobe epilepsy. They beat him into unconscienceness. It was the most violent uncalled for thing I have ever seen.

I am married to a cop, it takes alot for me to speak out against them. It still makes me ill to think of it.

The story takes a particular point of view, but there is too much missing information to make much sense out of it. (I’m speaking as a neurologist.)

There probably would not be such great danger in being handcuffed with a partial complex seizure — depends on the seizure. Some patients with complex partial seizures can become quite combative during or afterward, which could put police in a dilemma, especially if they didn’t realize what was going on. There are reports of patients with PC seizures seriously injuring others during a seizure.

I agree with greg p, it seems that some of the story is not there.
I’m not certain it is fair to state that he was ‘forced’ to plead in a particular manner (insanity in this case). He had a range of options available, including nolo contendre. Additionally, if he had competent council, he could have let this play out in the press for a while to see if the prosecutor really wanted the negative publicity of the situation.
