A cardiologist rants at an ER doc: Easy to do when your butt isn’t on the line

November 18, 2006

An ER doc wants to admit a CP patient. The cardiologist disagrees – and should come in and should evaluate the patient himself if he feels so strongly.

In reality (which has nothing to do with American Medicine) the patient probably didn’t need a medical admission, but we can’t practice medicine for the patients in this country, we have to practice it for the lawyers. This patient would have been sent home in non-litigous healthcare systems, and done fine. I admit 20 year olds with chest pain in the US (Usually after I CT-PA them) but give me a job in Canada, and I send home the 60 year old so he can follow up with his doc.

I saw that post and I wasn’t surprised by what I read. When I was a med/surg nurse, I was always getting screamed at by a handful of docs. You’re right, it easy to get nasty about admitting a patient when it’s not your butt on the line.
