Acne and suicide

A third of teenagers with bad acne have suicidal thoughts and more than 10 per cent have tried to kill themselves.

Amazing commentary on how poor medical reporting can be.

While it is certain that any valid published article had a second study group (no acne) for comparison, the article never mentioned this. Not only is causality left up in the air, but from the reporting, is is not evident that acne is associated in a harmful or protective manner.

And yet they blame Accutane for the depression, & make it harder to obtain than cocaine…

I think that was a Non-article. No mention of rates of suicidal thoughts/ depression/ anxiety in teenagers without acne or with comparison on or off acne meds.

Overall, I think KevinMD does not do a comprehensive take on issues pertaining to psychiatry. For example, no link to Shrink Rap, and you didn’t even mention (forgive me if I overlooked this) the Sunday NYTimes piece on difficulties with diagnosis in psychiatrically ill children.
Just my thoughts.
