Voluntary C-sections have a higher infant mortality

September 4, 2006

Something to think about for those scheduling for convenience:

Part of the reason for the increased mortality may be that labor, unpleasant as it sometimes is for the mother, is beneficial to the baby in releasing hormones that promote healthy lung function. The physical compression of the baby during labor is also useful in removing fluid from the lungs and helping the baby prepare to breathe air.

This is the United States. Who cares about Higher Infant Mortality. More Importantly, Voluntary C-Sections have lower lawsuit risk. Slice open those future plaintiff’s Uterus Boys!!!

You don’t get sued for the c/s you perform, only for the one you don’t.

Infant mortality be damned.

But if this study is correct and is backed up by further reviews, we may see a difference in case law and therefore in physician practice (notice I said that physician practice follows the change in case law?).
