High New England housing costs, student debt and an uncompetetive salary package would predictably drive off new hires who might realize that living in that community might not be as easy as elsewhere.

Hospitals actually do own medical practices, and all over the country in the 1990s, many hospitals bought local private practices from their physician owners in the hope of both vertically integrating their business model with referring practices, and to capture more completely inpatient business coming from physicians working in their practices. In many places, that didn’t work as well as expected and practices were “sold” back to the doctors and spun off.
