Are employers expected to accommodate this new diagnosis?

Which brings us to another management conundrum: you have a policy prohibiting workplace violence. You do not tolerate any employee who threatens other employees. But do you have an obligation to “reasonably accommodate” an employee who is diagnosed with intermittent explosive disorder? Are they protected by the ADA?

Interesting idea. But who says you have to let the person actually work?

If they are a danger to others, and threats or intimidating behavior is reasonable evidence of that, they should be sent home as too ill to work. If their illness persists, as in this case it probably will, they should be listed as permanently disabled. No one says you have to let them in the workplace if they are dangerous. That goes for all psychiatric disorders.

It seems that what these people really have is poor impulse control. Many probably also have personality disorders, which are not considered a disability and therefore should not be accorded a disability pension.
