The fractured nature of EHRs

And how the VA’s EHR can solve it. I’ve used VisTa and it’s good. Too bad the government can’t see that the solution for healthcare’s IT troubles is right under their nose.

How True
I trained at the VA and by far the best thing about the VA was the elctronic record. It is obvious to me that if we are to have a universally acceptable/interchangable medical record then one should look at what we already have instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. Clearly privacy/HIPAA issues need to be addressed under a univerisal system but in the end I think it would significantly cut down on “misses” and would make transfer of records from one doc to another much easier. In the end it would be best for patients and docs. Of course since it make sense I am sure the government won’t look at it :}

I agree that the VA Vista system works well. I am in training at a VA now, and I’ve been struck by the thought that this could be made public domain. I’m glad to see others agree.
