Medicare financial woes

To no one’s surprise, Medicare will go broke 2 years earlier than expected.

The bigger issue is that the Medicare Trustees also warned this week that the system will derive more than 45% of its funding from general revenues within six years. If the Trustees issue the same warning next year (which seems likely) Congress and the President are compelled to act under the Medicare Modernization Act. I think this is going to shape up as one of the big Medicare stories over the next couple of years, although it’s been virtually ignored so far.
