The NY Times profiles Dr. 90210.

“Skeptics in the medical profession question everything from Dr. Rey’s bedside manner (on a recent show he advised a patient, after giving her breast implants, to ‘take care of these babies, I worked hard for them’) to the way he rakishly wears a stethoscope “” plastic surgeons seldom use one “” draped around his Italian suit collars.

‘Only cardiologists and internists in hospitals need to wear stethoscopes,’ said Dr. Leslie H. Stevens, a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. ‘Plastic surgeons rarely need to listen to someone’s heart.’

It is also highly unusual for a surgeon to lift weights immediately before operating because pumping up the arm muscles can lead to tremors or muscle fatigue, Dr. Jewell said.”

    Don’t hate the player.

This guy is one of the warning signs of the apocolypse.

I have not seen the TV show. As far as I am concerned, as long as his patients are happy with the service and the outcome of the surgery, I don’t have a problem with his style. He has apparently combined his passion for acting, entertainment and surgery and getting well compensated for it. That’s more noble than getting 40% contingency fees for frivolous lawsuits. And the other plastic surgeons may just be jealous.

I bet the lawyers are salivating just waiting for this guy to screw up. Imagine the press coverage in a case like that.

  • Anonymous

He could probably be successfully sued for sexual harassment based on some of the comments attributed to him…

I haven’t seen the show, I just read the article, but from what I can tell, this guy’s ok. He’s successful–good for him. He’s flamboyant–who cares? I don’t buy into the ‘nail that sticks out should be hammered down’ stuff. He made it the hard way–I’d vote for him. I just hope he doesn’t get a big head, and I hope that migrants benefit from his success–this country was built on the backs of migrant labor. We are all of us migrants, including me.

I think Dr. Rey is just fine. He’s obviously good at what he does and I don’t think he engages in any behaviors that are outright dangerous, just different.

I was however surprised to read in the article that his undergraduate and medical degrees came from ASU and Tufts. They’re right, watching the show all he talks about is going to Harvard and I think he does it on purpose- it definitely has always been my impression that he went to med school and residency there.

That sort of turns me off about him, but otherwise, I think he’s great.

I personally don’t like his communication style, but if I were in need/want of plastic surgery, I just might pick him. He’s really not that much different from other doctors on the show. I was also under impression that he went to Harvard for at either med school or residency – his talk about Harvard all the time is misleading. I do think it’s just a matter of time until a patient doesn’t get the result she expected – lawyers will fight over a chance to sue him. He picks his patients carefully though – I saw one episode where he turned away a patient who mentioned that she had sued her gynecologist. His reason – too litigious.

I’ve watched the show a couple of times. What’s strange to me is that these guys put their personal lives on display as well. Rey’s Barbie-blonde wife with obviously plastic boobs stays at home all day and complains about how stressed out she is because her husband isn’t there with her (granted they have two small children). She’s so stressed out that she’s become anorexic. Anyone with one iota of medical background would look at her and see a typical skeleton-thin anorexic waif with two soccer balls. Her husband however had to be confronted with her “food journal” on the show to realize that she had a problem. This doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in his medical acumen.

Rey has everthing I’d want in my plastic surgeon, except taste in clothing.

About his work – his perfectionism shows in the results of the surgeries followed on the show. If cases are screened so that only the best results make it to TV, his best is generally a notch above the “best” of the other surgeons profiled.

He’s a perfectionist, very determined to make not just good but great, and it shows.

I have watched this show for awhile. I like him. Did they mention his trip to Mexico where he spent a week doing surgery for free?

  • Anonymous

Okay, so if a patient is clearly a victim of malpractice, then he’s not supposed to sue because none of you other turkeys will treat him because he’s ‘too litigious’? How do you know the merits or demerits of the case? You don’t, except that any lawsuit MUST be frivolous. In fact, why not just write it as one word from now on: frivolouslawsuit. No need for that extraneous space.

  • Anonymous

A plastic surgeon running a cash-only, elective cosmetic practice should be able to pick and choose who they want to “treat” based on whatever reason. What “treatment” was the patient being turned away from anyway. A treatment for ugliness? I’m sure that had such a dire impact on her health and well-being…

    Boo freakin hoo.

    1. Rey is not board certified

    2. A monkey can put a piece of plastic under a pec (just look at all of the er “trained” and ob/gyn “trained” “cosmetic” “surgeons”)

    3. Rey is a lying sack of dog s..t – he did slave labor at Harvard, that is not where he got his plastic surgery training

    4. it’s only a matter of time before he butchers someone and gets nailed by a money grubbin’ patient because of the perception that he is a super rich plastic surgeon/movies star

Dr. Rey might be a player but no doctor. He can run but cant hide, its all catching up to him. The story of his own brother’s surgery that he did on him is bad enough. He was in a coma. he then sued him. many patients sued and he paid out. E has no idea what kind of problems this man is. He is not BC in plastic surgery, would you have him do brain surgery on you? dont think so. There are too many wonderful doctors out there that dont need a show to get business, who have been doing it for over 15 years all over L.A. I wouldnt want a dr that works out sweating and shaking to open me up. thats how mistakes happen. Public records show of so many cases of this doctor not being at harvard med school ever proven fact, call yourself. Why is he hiding his credentials? if he says he would be in jail in brazil, then what does this say about the kind of person he is. He is a thief after your money with no care in the world of what happens to any of his patients even his brother. He didnt even know his wife was sick, a Doctor would know this. Is he even a doctor are those certificates on the wall even his? If I was Channel “E” i would look into that and run background check from birth, he might not even say who he is. Then the show would be liable. sexually harrasses all the woman, and its a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I know he wishes he had attended Harvard med but he didn’t, and wishing doesn’t make it so. That fact that he is so misleading along with his other affectations makes him impossible to watch.

A child, Sydney, should have to ask her father if he loves her on the phone, go home Roberto, take care of your familia and put the demons of your papa to rest. You are ok even if you didn’t get to Harvard.

Just recently I saw an episode of Dr. 90210. Dr. Rey’s wife looks horrible! She is so rail thin and her face is gaunt! Dr. Rey seems to be more interested in his physical activities like karate and such, that he to me appears to be very selfish. His wife is wasting away in a huge mansion and that is just terrible. Her anorexia is obviously a plea for attention.

I am Brazilian myself and living in USA. Unfortunately we Brazilians are very arrogant people compare to other races. We have the need to prove to the world we are the best and Dr. Rey is the typical Brazilian when it comes to arrogance. He is an idiot, who bought a house, owe money to the bank and can’t afford to purchase furniture and decorations for the house. His family barely eat, there is no food in the house, his kids don’t go to pre-school and he has no maid. He has no money to take his own family to a decent social activity (remember the park he took his family to camp, no other people around, no baths), and all could afford was a cheap tent. He only cares about himself and he is a closet gay. Nothing against gay people but be proud of it! Don’t try to prove a point of being a macho like he does. I feel really sorry for his wife and kids. Look at them, Hayley is anorexic and the kids are neglected. He is a “body conceited’, I want to see him do a nose job or a face lift. Boobs are the easiest procedure. He is not a B.C. and never went to Harvard. He is a liar. His colleagues hate him, his siblings hate him. He is an accident looking for a place to happen, because will happen. I would never go to a doc like him. By the way, now that the lie about his father being a monster and him (Dr. Rey) living in poverty can’t be used any more, what else he will invent to be the center of attention?

Dr. Rey is obnoxious, phony, cold person and a clown. He is not BC doctor. His Versace or whatever suits are second-hand and don’t match the Flea Market $1.00 necklace he wears. His colorful suits don’t fit well on him because he is a very short in stature. His needs to be extremely enthusiastic about complementing women are a cover-up for his obviously gayness. His obsession with martial arts is explained by the fact that he screws his poor wife while fantasying about the guys he rubs his skin against on the martial arts performances. Dr.Rey turns down patients with very minor medical problems because he is afraid to do the same he did to his own brother. His own brother’s wife sued Dr. Rey for malpracitce because when giving his brother hair plugs he made him a paraplegic who can’t even eat anymore or move his neck. According to the brother’s attorney, he is permanently disabled and unable to return to work as a storyboard artist in Hollywood. He seemed to be living pretty well for what sounded like poor people and I doubted if his father was such a monster like Dr. Rey claims. Now Dr. Rey is doing the same to his own kids. That makes him a monster too. He doesn’t talk about his mother who likes in US. I guess she hates him too. He wants to go back to Brazil when he is 65 years old. He should go back now.

Dr. Rey wants to be a DOCTOR and his wife an ACTRESS. Good luck to them!

Dr. Rey’s wife Hayley is also Dr. Rey’s business manager, when she first met him he had patients who owned him over $16,000 and she helped straighten that out and she still runs helps Dr Rey’s business from home as well as being a full time mom. I do think she is under too much stress. Dr. Rey comes across as having invented himself as confident, friendly and upbeat, but to me he seems incredibly insecure and very sad. If you saw the episode where he said that someday he was going back to “his people” that clearly indicates he is not really comfortable with the life he has made for himself and doesn’t consider this country his real place in life, not even this family, although he makes some efforts to stop in to visit his family occasionally so he can feel like he’s a great husband and father. It’s such a farce and he seems so uncomfortable to me, possible and that is why he uses the excuse of work. It’s amazing that an established man with his own business, wife and kids that has so many accomplishments can still suffer this incredible agony of self-doubt and no self-esteem. He is a lousy doc with an inflated ego that’s bigger than his empty house and insists that he doesn’t have a partner because of the ego’s that doctors have, especially plastic surgeons. I guess nobody can stand him. I don’t know how Hayley can stand him. He has some nerve to want to go in the bed with wifey and watch his surgeries instead of making love to her or asking how she is doing or feeling! He is gay.
He says “My business is all about appearance…” Doesn’t it look as if he is wearing a hairpiece??? Little does he realize how insane and clearly fake it looks?

Is it true his operating on his brother left his brother paralized ?

I was the lone holdout juror. The 11-1 vote in Santa Monica Superior Court was in favor of the defense; jurors believed that it was not the fault of the anesthesiologist that Dr. Robert Rey’s brother, one of the very best storyboard artists in the world, suffered a ‘brain bleed’ during hair transplant surgery. The surgeon was his brother, Dr. Robert Rey. Contrary to the reports on this blog, Dr. Roberto Rey’s brother has severe cognitive impairments — but he walked into court. I wonder why anybody would ever perform any surgery on their brother — much less in a surgery center (not a hospital) which was completely lacking blood transfusion capabilities.
