Bizarre non-medical story of the week - Man accidentally divorces wife in his sleep:
Under Islamic law, a husband need only say "I divorce you" three times to secure a permanent end to his marriage . . .
. . . But 30-year-old Ansari said he had no intention of leaving his wife of 11 years.
"I have not given talaq. When I uttered talaq three times I had taken medicines to help me sleep," he was quoted as saying in the report.
The religious leaders said that before remarrying, the couple would have to be apart for at least 100 days and that the wife, Sohela, would also have to spend a night with another man and then be divorced by him.
Comments:
In the cnn.com story: "The law clearly says any action under compulsion or in a state of intoxication has no effect. The case of someone uttering something while asleep falls under this category and will have no impact whatsoever," according to an Islamic scholar.

As a muslim in the know, I can state that many "Islamic" laws have been perverted by ignorant, backward Islamic "scholars" to yield exactly this kind of stupidity. Unfortunately, we muslims have a low literacy rate and even many of those who are literate and still poorly educated. This is bound to lead to a rise in the number of uneducated islamic "scholars", who bring down moronic statements such and these turn Islam into something it's not. It's very saddening for me as a muslim to see how badly off we are today.
drpak,
I am glad to hear some outrage. Any voice of common sense and civility is lacking from the muslim community. Every religion and society has its quirks and ignorance but where is the outrage against the ignorant extremists from the muslim community? The lack of it since 9-11 has me thinking this realy is a war against a religion that apear to have been completely twisted and hijacked. It defies any common sense that you would want to kill a man just because they converted from your religion. Absolutely barbaric. That mindset doesn't come from God. Satan maybe.

Anon 9:19,
I was living in Peshawar when 9/11 happened. I'm sad to say I found many people there who actually welcomed those events, and very few who condemned them outright.
It's best to remember something many practicing, well-educated muslims themselves tell non-muslims (and indeed each other) - that is don't judge Islam by the actions of us muslims.

Are you saying then that the religion has been completely hijacked and those with any remaining sense are afraid to speak out against extremism? I have asked this to some muslim friends of mine and I get a response something like "A muslim can't judge another muslim" In other words what they do is what they do.
Yes, to a large extent, Islam *has* been hijacked by Bin Laden and Co. It is absolutely; unequivocally wrong to kill innocent people as al Qaeda is doing everyday in Iraq. There is no debate about this, and nothing further to say as far as the viewpoint of Islam on the matter is concerned. Islam as projected by Bin Laden and the other crazies is a new phenomenon in recent Islamic history.
And no, the moderates are not afraid to speak out; it's just that they're not heard as well. After all, suicide bombs are more newsworthy than an a speech or book by a muslim promoting tolerance and peaceful co-existence.
"Muslims cannot judge other muslims" is like saying "don't judge others" which is all well and good in minor day-to-day choices of living, but when your religion is being defined in the public eye by the actions of others, it's your duty and responsibility to speak out.
That being said, I must unfortunately admit that my opinion is in the minority. I once told a group of class fellows of mine in Peshawar that I believed, as a Muslim, that Jews and Christians were our brethren. This didn't go down well at all, and I was even told that one person later said that I should have been killed for what I said. Too many Muslims are just hell bent on blaming "The West" or "The Jews" for all their problems. Again, this is not Islam, this is the ignorance of those who profess to practice Islam.
For those who are interesting in learning more about the real face of Islam, they can visit www.understanding-Islam.com. You can also look up the divorce issue that was mentioned in the post on this website. You’ll see the actual guidelines given to a Muslim to deal with divorce are completely different from those that the Islamic “scholars” mentioned in the original post propounded.
