The odds are not so nearly remote as the article suggests.

My neighbors (a Kenyan woman and a white American man) have a son who is mostly black, but on his neck, chest, and belly the skin on one side is considerably lighter than on the other side. There is a jagged dividing line down the middle.

Wow, this rare case is called the Bombay Phenomen. It has a 1 in 2 billion chance of occuring. The pathogenesis is due to the fact that two eggs were fertilized by two different sperms. You see, a sperm can last 72 hours in the uterus. The first case reported was a white female who had sex with her white husband, and the next day she had sex with her black boyfriend. After 9 months guess what came out? Yes, one white baby and one black baby.
Post a Comment »One reality of paternity is learned when family memebers are tested for compatibility with organ transplantation. The rate at which paternity is incidentally proven to be otherwise from what the family thinks is about 5%. This rate is only for the surprise paternity situations; people who know or suspect a question of paternity probably find ways of avoiding a tell all test.
Perhaps the family's explanation is the right one. But if it were my brood, I don't think I would keep things a little quieter. As a scientist I would remain dubiously skeptical of their claims until paternity testing was completed.

I can just picture the DNA dividing and one little patch of genes tearing off and staying on the wrong side, or something. (obviously, I'm no scientist).
