A rant on patient expectations vs patient entitlement:
A patient could expect to be seen on time but is not entitled to this. An expectation not an entitlement. We actually could not think of any more entitlements than the one we came up with. Most of what we discussed seemed to be expectations.

Patients with a displaced sense of entitlement are actually quite annoying. Almost as annoying as doctors who have disdain for patients and don't respect their complaints enough to fully listen to their problems. Almost.

Close to 5000 office visits move across me on the river of medicine I call my practice. Not a day goes by where I either fail to meet someone's expectations or come across an unreasonable SOB with a sense of entitlement that their issue should dominate the entire attention of my office because, for example, they are the CEO or the Whaterthehellitis Corporation. It upsets me to not meet a patient's expectations and it enrages me when the entitled cross the threshold.

Not that the Declaration of Independence represents an authoritative piece of work but there is some good quotable stuff in there. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Pulled out my copy of the DOI and looked intensely for the section of free medications. Not there.

I looked for the section on "no waiting more than 10 minutes in a doctors office". Not there.

I looked for "having the doctor call every family member on their private jet with constant updates about Grandma because we are too busy to get our rich fat butts into the hospital to see her ourselves." I originally thought that was there and then realized I was wrong. Not there.

Life, Liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness. Pursuit. The opportunity to have the freedom to pursue a dream or a goal. Not the entitled attainment of that goal.

Dr. K. Is such a sweetie I could never get angry at him no matter what he posts. Even if I don't agree with what he says ALOT of times, I appreciate his great sense of humor! He already got raked over pretty good on this one.

i dont see any humor here. you sound as if you've got pissed off. it's part of your job. no one can't please everybody all the time.

there are annoying people EVERYWHERE, it's not just in your workplace.

    transferrance and countertransferrance
Freud may not hold sway over all of psychiatry any longer, but these concepts explain the dynamics of almost any human interaction.

A fable once told of the sun and the wind. The wind believed it was stronger and when challenged would swipe the coat from a man; but the man only clutched tighter. The sun gently warmed the man who loosened and removed his coat with nary an effort from the sun.

People are the same. Some can rant, demand, turn red in the face and declare their rights and entitlements require actions of people around them; yet people only clutch tighter to their defences. Others are like the sun and motivate extra effort and caring from the people around them.

There must be some survival benefit to being the wind personality otherwise it would have died off a thousand generations ago. I just cannot fathom how people who behave this way can continue to thrive as our world continues to have greater dependency upon those whom we have daily interaction.

the problem is, of course, economic. people get angry because they don't get what they want (or, depressed, to continue the Freudian theme). in our society, we usually get what we want by BUYING it. unfortunately, due to the third party payer system, individuals can't buy better treatment in medical service. This is changing with concierge treatment--but those types of services are only in their infancy. once they take off, doctors will be able to say--you want better service, go down the street to the doctor who has a low volume/high quality service--otherwise you're stuck with me, the typical noxious, pompous, careless individual who become a doctor.

I didn't mean to imply that I thought this particular post was humorous. I just meant in general he is full of humor. If you ever read any of his BLOG, you will see it. Sorry!
  6. I would have no desire to see a doctor who displayed such a severe frustration online to anyone to see. This is even more frustrating to those who actually have considerable reasoning for calling, checking in on loved ones as well as themselves. Take care of your office, make certain everyone understands why they are there, TO HELP THOSE IN NEED!, and practice patience and good listening skills. A good doctor/nurse will be able to tell if someone is crying wolf, however, there are ways to resolution, FIND ONE! He's the doctor, that's why we call. I hope I don't learn who he is at Christus because I've had surgery there, and have no problem passing on his unprofessional way of venting frustration which is apparent he only "understands" his side of the situation.

Does he complain that people take off work, lose money, get laid off due to illness because they spend time in the doctor's office while he sits in his "cushy chair" and receives his nice check each month.

I'm appalled at our physician/nurse treatment these days!
