TV doctors break bad news better than the real ones. “Medics in hospital soaps always seem to get this unpleasant task just right, drawing the curtains round the bed, talking in hushed tones with a sympathetic hand on the knee and the suggestion of a tear in the eye. In reality, bad news may be conveyed more hurriedly and more publicly – and by someone who has had no training at all in communication skills.”
