Tom Cruise cant just hook up an ultrasound and see the baby, you need somebody who knows how to use the machine and knows how to interpret the images.

Cruise must have hired some ultrasound technician "under the table" to do this work.

And yes, ultrasound is not 100% benign. If you pulse the fetus for hours on end because you dont know what you are doing, there is evidence that it increases fetal distress and can cause tachycardia, increase meconium (risk factor for serious life threatening infection) and in general make the baby uncomfortable.

As far as I know, there are no proven long term adverse effects of the use of ultrasound. There have been no study to show a higher incidence of growth or mental retardation, cancer, psychiatric problems, immune deficiency, etc. Is this much ado about nothing? Isn't the fetus at higher risk for morbidity or mortality when the mother is driving on the interstate?
On the other hand, we do a lot of CT of the head on children with very minor head injury and we do know the proven hazards of radiation exposure.

So I guess Mr. Cruise, the high school dropout, is now an expert in radiology as well as a psychiatry. Perhaps he and Dr. Elliot could open up a joint medical practice since they seem to know more than MD's do about practicing medicine.
