George Clooney considered killing himself while dealing with the pain arising from a tear of the spinal dura. “Clooney’s complaints were dismissed until spinal fluid started leaking from his nose. He has since had numerous operations.” (via FARK.com)

“Clooney’s complaints were dismissed until spinal fluid started leaking from his nose.”

I don’t think his complaints were dismissed. He is a celebrity and celebrity’s complaints are never dismissed by treating physicians. Unless he saw a Beverly Hills outpatient internist who overbooked him.
However, the article doesn’t mention if Clooney himself or the treating physician dismissed his initial complaint of headache.

    More Here:

I basically bruised my brain. It’s bouncing around my head because it’s not supported by the spinal fluid’, the former ER star added.

He suffered constant pain and splitting headaches as doctors initially could not identify the problem.

Despite doctors’ initial puzzlement, a neurologist eventually identified the problem and Clooney underwent a series of operations that banished his headaches.

Also, here Clooney has made a point to retract, or at least contextualize, the assertion that he considered suicide to end his pain.

  • SarahW

    Also, the Sunday Times printed

Close associates claim doctors dismissed Clooney’s complaints until spinal fluid started leaking from his nose. (emphasis added)

  • SarahW

Here’s a column where Clooney speaks for hismself, and more frankly:

George Clooney still bitter at dismissive doctors

GEORGE CLOONEY is still sore at the Los Angeles doctors who insisted the blinding headaches he suffered on the set of SYRIANA last year (05) were nothing.

The movie star jetted back to California from Morocco, convinced that something was wrong when fluid started dripping out of his nose and nothing could shift his painful headaches.
But it was only when he went to see a neurologist that he learned of the extent of his problems …

He recalls, “It was like an ice-cream brain freeze 24 hours a day. “A lot of the doctors were like, ‘You’ve got a headache. Go home.’ I understand what they were thinking: ‘Oh, he’s an actor. He’s being dramatic.’”

  • Anonymous

“A lot of the doctors were like, ‘You’ve got a headache. Go home.”

He should file a malpractice lawsuit against these doctors for pain and suffering incurred because of missed diagnosis and for not adhering to the standard of care on a celebrity.
On the other hand he’s an actor and he could be exaggerating.
If he saw the doctors blogging here, he would have been diagnosed in no time. We’ll even know if he has P.E., aortic dissection or blockage of his coronary arteries.

“If he saw the doctors blogging here, he would have been diagnosed in no time.”

Certainly Dr. Elliot would’ve diagnosed malpractice and solicited an ambulance chaser by now. :)

  • Anonymous

If he showed up at my ER (assuming he got in to be seen after an 8 hour waiting room visit) he would have gotten a CT, lumbar puncture and discharge.

  • Anonymous

I’m surprised some of the physicians here couldn’t just diagnose him from that article, Frist style. They don’t need information to reach conclusions.

  • Anonymous

“frist style’? I just realized it. The ambulance chasers are going to mortgage the ranch to try and make sure Frist doesn’t win in 2008. I wonder why? Suddenly the girl Bubba didn’t bang for 8 years in the White House looks like a good bet!

As I’ve stated before, as a rule people don’t go to the doctor for a “simple headache”. They go because their headache is especially bad, or frequent or chronic, and or they have symptoms of other illness or a history of trauma.

Would any of you have told George to go home with his history of trauma, AND a headache dating to that trauma AND his description of the duration and intensity of his pain?

“As I’ve stated before, as a rule people don’t go to the doctor for a “simple headache”.”

Another one of those Fristian statements. Clooney’s headache was not simple, therefore, everybody and anybody who sees a doctor for a headache does not have a simple headache. I wonder if your mother should have proceeded with that abortion when you were a fetus.

  • SarahW

lovely thought about the abortion, there.

Again, would any of you have told George to go home with his history of trauma, AND a headache dating to that trauma AND his description of the duration and intensity of his pain?

“As I’ve stated before, as a rule people don’t go to the doctor for a “simple headache”.”

And you are?……… obvioulsy not a doctor.

  • Anonymous

Again, would any of you have told George to go home with his history of trauma, AND a headache dating to that trauma AND his description of the duration and intensity of his pain?

Yes if his exam was normal, imaging was normal, LP was normal. George is lucky that CSF started dripping from his nose. Many people have terrible headaches with no objective findings on clinical exam or imaging.

  • SarahW

Would you have told George to go home, with his history of trauma, AND a headache dating to that trauma AND his description of the duration and intensity of his pain?

    Anyone? Beuller?

  • SarahW

    Thanks, anony 11:11.

If he were leaking CSF, wouldn’t decreased CSF show up on imaging? or would it be too subtle to see?

  • SarahW

And wouldn’t an LP show the decrease in pressure> Or would that be too subtle as well?

I agree with the above ER doc. If George Clooney showed up in my ER, every other patient would suffer, Security would escort the homeless drunks out the door, and the hospital CEO and Director of the ER would show up to make sure his care was OK. He would get an inpatient bed within the hour, even though the average wait for a bed is 12-14 hours.

  • SarahW

I wonder why poor George had so much trouble getting taken seriously, given his history and his symptoms.

  • SarahW

indicated MRI could be useful in confirming a diagnosis of a CSF leak.

“I wonder why poor George had so much trouble getting taken seriously, given his history and his symptoms. “

Probably because Hollywood Stars see a specialist for every sniffle and because of that they don’t get taken seriously. Poor George!

  • Anonymous

I am sure George was taken seriously and had appropriate testing but felt he was not “taken seriously” because his diagnosis remained elusive.

I agree with the ER docs above. When a a certain NBA star’s NEPHEW was taken to our ER it initiated the whole ridiculous charade desribed above.

Reminds me of Kevins recent post of Lebron James hospitalization and extensive for “pleuisy”. For the rest of us an H and P, vital signs, possibly an EKG and CXR, and a bottle of Motrin would be a perfectly adequate standard of care.

Are you kdding me? Lebron James makes 20 Million dollars a year! My insurance policy covers me for $1 million for an occurence. If ANYTHING happens to him this season the ER doc pays. I don’t care if he has costochondritis; CJD just had an orgasm reading the above, and I’m not risking my career on the oft chance he goes out next week and boxes his heart on some bad cocaine. Ask Gilbert Mudge.

We’re just a star-struck society. Whether you’re a doctor or a lawyer, a housewife or a plumber or a farmer, there is a papparazzi in each one of us. Look at this blog. Clooney got the most comments.

  • A Voice

I live with chronic pain and post concussion sydrome due to a blow to my head. I completely believe Clooney was ignored by his doctors. As a patient I can tell you with absolute certainty that many if not most doctors ignore or downplay patients claims of severe pain. It’s disgusting.
Come on over and read my blog (Clooney stories included) about how the patient has to deal with it.

I really do not need the time of someone with no sense of humor. Sadly, there is no cure for your problem.

i still am leaking fluid and now no help. i have recently been told by a neurologist this is all from a
traumatic experience i received sometime during my life and is now presenting itself as all these medical symptoms…. crazy , yes.
However i still can not get any help and i am not making all this up. Doctors just don’t care or they just arn’t taking me serious
enough.. Still looking for releif and some help. Can you help me?

“i feel the skin graft came out and
i still am leaking fluid and now no help.” This happened to me–I had the leak fixed last year and this year began to notice some leakage. I have since

“i feel the skin graft came out and
i still am leaking fluid and now no help.” This happened to me this year. I had a leak last year (which went on for eight months and was treated as an allergy problem), which was diagnosed when I got meningitis. A repair was done in March. This March I became aware of some leakage, only coming out when I got up in the morning, which didn’t show up on MRI or even drip for the neurosurgeon. I got meningitis again before it was repaired. I have since learned that you collect some of the drippage in a sterile container and take it to your internal medicine physician and ask to have a beta-transferrin test done to identify it as csf. The normal internal medicine doctor would be freaked enough by your knowing the name of the test to have it done without question. THEN you go to the neurosurgeon to fix it.

I HAVE A CSF LEAK ALSO! I ALSO AM AN ACTOR! AND YES I DO BELIEVE THEY DISMISSED CLOONEY IT HAPPENED TO ME ALSO. FIRST, ACTORS DO NOT GO FOR EVERY SNIFFLE, IN FACT THAT IS HOW SO MANY ACTORS AND NEWS PEOPLE DIE EARLY LIKE GILDA RADNER. THEY NEVER GET TO THE DOCTOR BECAUSE THEY ARE ALWAYS WORKING, AND WHEN THEY ARE OFF TRY TO REST FROM THE GRULLING DAYS ON SETS, ETC. MY CONCLUSION WITH THIS IS THERE ARE A FEW DIFFERENT COMPONENTS TO THIS CSF LEAK MESS. ONE IS THE DOCTORS ARE AFRAID OF LAW SUITS, TWO…CSF LEAKS ARE LIFE THREATENING AND THEY ARE AFRAID TO GOD FORBID, MAKE U WORSE. AND THREE THEY TREAT IT VERY CONSERVATIVELY. I WAS IN SHOCK THAT CLOONEY GOT FIXED. HES A VERY GUTSY GUY TO BE FLYING ALL OVER WITH IT. TAKE IT FROM ME THE CONDITION IS A NIGHTMARE. I DONT BLAME THE GUY FOR SAYING SUICIDE OR THOUGHT ABOUT IT OR YOU WOULD HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THAT. I AM NOT SAYING I WOULD DO THAT BUT I CAN UNDERSTAND THE PAIN. THIS IS NOTHING NEAR A FLIPPING HEADACHE. I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO MEET THE GENIOUS WHO MADE THAT UP. ITS SEVERE HEAD PAIN AND WHEN U FIRST GET IT, ITS LIKE A MACK TRUCK HIT YOU AND LEFT YOU FOR DEAD. THE DOCTORS SHOULD UPDATE THE FILES AND THE INFORMATION ON IT. AND ALL THE PEOPLE ALMOST EVERY BLOG SAID NO ONE GOES FOR A HEADACHE AND THAT IS TRUE CUZ ITS NOT A HEADACHE. BRAIN FREEZE YES, MACH TRUCK AND LEFT FOR DEAD YES. HEADACHE NO. HEADACHE IS A SLIGHT PAIN AND U TAKE ADVIL AND ITS GONE IN A HOUR. I DONT THINK I EVER HAD ONE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. MAYBE ONE WHEN I DIDNT SLEEP ENOUGH BUT IM SURE SOME GUY IN THE 1950S PUT THAT DOWN. ITS REALLY A SAD CONDITION. ITS SO DEBILITATING U WOULD DIE. DONT MISS QUOTE ME NOW LOL. ITS LIKE A OUT OF BODY EXPERIENCE AND THERE ARE A BUNCH OF TERRIBLE SYMPTOMS. I COMMEND GEORGE FOR DOING SOMETHING. AND I COMMEND HIM FOR SPEAKING OUT. I WISH HE WOULD DO MORE OF IT AND GET A ORGANIZATION GOING FOR IT. PUT MORE TIME INTO THIS INSTEAD OF AFRICA. I KNOW THEY NEED IT TO BUT YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS U TOO GEORGE. I AM STILL SUFFERING AND PRAYING FOR MIRACLES. IF I HAD HIS MONEY MAYBE I WOULD BE BETTER BY NOW. GOD IS STILL WITH ME AND IM HERE TO DO A JOB, OBVIOUSLY ITS NOT COMPLETED YET. I HOPE THIS BRINGS SOME INSITE TO THIS. SORRY IF SO MANY TYPOS ITS LATE, LAYING ON MY SIDE, CUZ OF LEAK AND IM TIRED. I PRAY FOR A CURE!
