The Boston Globe says no to a drug-ad ban

“But here is my biggest objection to banning drug ads: The call for a ban assumes that Americans are weak-minded and gullible — practically impotent in the face of slick and seductive advertising (The use of the word impotent was not a subliminal attempt to sell erectile dysfunction drugs.)”

But consumers are typically gullible. How can they not be? The average person is either ill or misinformed about anything broader than the specific world they see everyday including their health among other things.

My main objection is doctor’s refusal to know when, and have the gall, to say ‘No’ to patients concerning requests for prescription drugs. Shouldn’t that be a responsibility of a physician?

Do we really want to limit the first amendment because physicians are too scared to tell patient’s they won’t give them prescriptions or too burdened to take the time to study such ‘popular’ drugs?
