Some surgeons in India are performing coronary bypass surgeries while the patient remains awake

“In the awake coronary artery bypass (ACAB) surgery, an epidural anesthesia is applied to the patient at a point at the top of the spine. ‘The area below the neck becomes numb. It is not paralyzed as the patient continues to breathe normally,’ Dr Honnekeri explains.

As a result of the type of anesthesia, the patient is completely awake when the surgery is being performed. No respirator is needed and the patient is required to wear only an oxygen mask.”

From what I have heard going on in the operating room as an internist watching a surgical operation, I worry what must be going through the patient’s mind, listening.. especially with one’s chest cut open. Better sleep it off. ..Maurice.
