On 3/15/05 i saw apatient with 3 days of fever and nothing else. Because of a community outbreak I checked and confirmed that he actually had influenza. A CXR was negative. 3 days later he was better, but, had a cough. I thought I was being ridiculous, but, since he has asthma and the weekend was looming I had him come in and found that he now had pneumonia on CXR. I wonder (no, I really DON'T wonder) what the lawyers would have said if I hadn't done the 2nd CXR?

I would also wonder about the facts as clinical cases.blogspot.com apparently does also. This is the problem with newspaper stories. One would wonder what workup and treatment went on until she died on March 12th. I would strongly suspect that the patient had some chronic systemic or pulmonary illness before she developed the acute respiratory illness. The chronic illness perhaps complicated her treatments and contributed to her death.

The defendant would have saved THE PATIENT"S LIFE had she just, i) ordered a chest X-ray; or ii) prescribed empiric antibiotics regardless.
